Get a Taste of the UK at Jones Wood Foundry on the UES
Even if you live on the UES, you may be surprised that Jones Wood Foundry has been in the neighborhood since 2011. Tucked away on East 76th Street, the entrance appears to be a traditional pub, but as you enter you’re welcomed into an airy expansive space with sky lights and outdoor space. It’s a real estate dream that any city dweller would be jealous of. And that’s even before discussing the authentic British cuisine from Chef/Owner Jason Hicks.
The menu is just as expansive as the venue, which will take multiple visits to try all of the must-try dishes. Once we made the difficult decision of what to narrow down to order, we decided to try a traditional Scotch Egg, fried to perfection with the jammy egg well intact. We also had to get a side of Bubble & Squeak (potatoes, cabbage and assorted vegetables, combined and fried) as it’s not something you can find on many menus. Something I’ve also never seen on another menu was the Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Parfait, which was super rich and creamy, served with the perfect accoutrements of cornichons, grape chutney and tremendous brioche toast.
A good burger is usually a good indicator of a good restaurant, but the JWF Burger is great. Accompanied with your choice of Stilton or Cheddar Cheese, the burger already comes with bacon, which is the best kind of burger. While already a hearty portion, the burger cannot compete with the “chips,” which were the longest and sturdiest fries I have ever seen. You have a choice of a salad but now is not the time to be healthy. Indulge and you will not regret it. The burger is best shared to make room for all of the items you’re going to want to try here.
Although already full, I can never turn down dessert and we opted for the Banoffee Pie, a perfect combination of crunchy graham cracker crust, creamy condensed milk toffee and whipped cream, fresh bananas and candied almonds and shaved chocolate garnishes. You can get authentic British flavors uptown without jumping across the pond. It was a perfect ending to a perfect meal.
There are still so many unique menu items I will need to go back to try and as most of the menu items read comfort food, Fall and Winter are the perfect time to go. Not to mention that JWF leans into the holiday season with special menus for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Boxing Day and NYE. They even have a British Expats kit! This is definitely a place you can bring friends, family, a date, a perfect place for any occasion.
