Escape to the Tropics at Gitano Island
It may feel very Carrie Bradshaw-esque to say so, but there’s only one word to describe the new Gitano Island beach club: fabulous. From the delectable cocktails to the elevated decor and the fashion-forward attendees, Gitano Island exudes luxury in every sense of the word.
On May 24th, they held their opening night, offering a tantalizing taste of their menu's finest culinary creations and beverages. Our attentive and convivial waiter, Carlos, checked in frequently to ensure our satisfaction and had the astuteness to time our drink orders perfectly, ensuring our glasses were never empty. The dinner menu featured guacamole and cashew snap pea appetizers, a Kampachi tostada and truffle mushroom sopes as starters, Lubina Fish in corn husk and short rib birria as the main course, and a decadent cazuela de chocolate for dessert. The guacamole and fish dishes were the highlights of the evening, with the ceviche-style tostada boasting perfect tartness and refreshment, while the corn husk fish was cooked to flaky perfection. The meal encompassed everything one could desire from a beach club experience.
We had the pleasure of sampling the signature cocktails of the evening: the Gitano margarita, the Disco 75, and the Jungle Fever. Each cocktail skillfully incorporated the familiar flavors of its classic inspiration, but with the unique tropical twist that Gitano is renowned for. The Disco 75, in particular, featured a delightful addition of raspberry extract to balance the original cocktail's usual acidity, resulting in a beautiful pink hue that was incredibly Instagram-friendly. Guests congregated around the bar, located at the heart of the tented dining area, infusing the space with a vibrant and energetic ambiance as bartenders skillfully prepared drinks while engaging in lively conversations with the crowd.
The evening's entertainment was provided by DJ duo The Muses, who seamlessly blended tropical beats with the latest chart-toppers. Several tables near the dance area offered bottle service for those seeking proximity to the action but not partaking in the dinner service. The sandy dance floor was tucked under a canopy of palm trees, providing ample room for revelers to showcase their moves while still fostering an intimate atmosphere that facilitated new friendships and meet-cutes.
Gitano Island is positioning itself as the city's premier destination for birthday parties and summertime celebrations, making it an ideal choice for large groups of friends. Just remember to arrive promptly for the ferry departure, as the scenic ride lasts a mere five minutes, with boats departing every half hour. The club closes at 10 pm and ensures a ferry for all guests to safely return to Manhattan, making it the perfect spot for either an early evening or for pre-clubbing dinner and drinks!
