An Evening of Cocktails and Culture at Isla & Co's Espresso Martini Cocktail Masterclass
In the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, there exists a culinary gem known as Isla & Co. This Australian restaurant has made quite a name for itself with its renowned Espresso Martini, and on a crisp October evening, I had the privilege of being invited to their exclusive Espresso Martini Cocktail Masterclass.
When it comes to the diverse culinary scene of New York City, Isla & Co stands out. This restaurant, nestled at 107 N 12th Street, brings the flavors of Australia to the heart of the Big Apple. Boasting a young and vibrant ambiance, Isla & Co has become a must-visit destination for foodies and coffee enthusiasts alike
A Warm Welcome
The anticipation for the evening was heightened by the warm and welcoming email I received in advance of the event. It asked us to arrive at 6:30 PM for welcome drinks and bites, as the masterclass was set to begin promptly at 7:00 PM. This attention to detail and thoughtfulness was a clear indication of the care and dedication that Isla & Co pours into every aspect of their guest experience.
The hosts for the evening were a gracious and knowledgeable presence. They ensured that all the guests felt at home and guided us through the variety of espresso-based cocktails with enthusiasm and expertise. They told us the story behind the restaurant, the espresso martini; and why coffee is very important to them. They came from Australia and brought their culture, food, and coffee all the way to New York City.
Can you guess where the first espresso martini was made?
Legend has it that in 1983, a young, future supermodel came up to a bartender in London and asked for a drink that would wake her up and get her drunk. Hence, the first espresso martini was created.
In line with the theme of the night, we were given a gift bag that contained an Espresso Martini starter pack (Voda, coffee liqueur and a small shaker), Mr. Black stickers and an espresso martini recipe by Isla.
The Venue: An Oasis of Elegance
Upon arrival, the ambiance of Isla & Co immediately captivated me. The restaurant was a stylish oasis, designed with an eye for detail. Candles cast a warm glow, playing with shadows against the rustic wooden tables, and the dimmed lighting created an inviting and intimate atmosphere. The scent of freshly brewed coffee was in the air, mingling with the appetizing aroma of Australian cuisine.
The experience was also accompanied by a talented artist who was creating personalized caricatures of guests. It's a delightful way to capture memories of your visit, adding both a whimsical touch to the more upscale dining experience and a layer of personalization to the event, leaving us with unique souvenirs of the night.
The Masterclass: Crafting Cocktails with Experts
One of the restaurant's standout features is its renowned “OG” Espresso Martini. Isla & Co has mastered the art of crafting this classic cocktail, earning a reputation for serving one of the best in the city. Whether you're a coffee aficionado or a cocktail lover, their Espresso Martini is a must-try, combining the rich flavors of coffee with the kick of vodka.
On Tuesday night, Isla & Co closed their doors to patrons to bring in expert mixologists who would guide us through the art of crafting the three different Espresso Martini drinks, each paired thoughtfully with curated Australian appetizers, enhancing the overall experience.
The flight included the Olive Temptation with Starward Australian Whisky, house-roasted coffee, banana, cream, and olive oil, the Scarlett Rose with Tequila Reposado, Licor 43, house-roasted espresso, and a touch of salt, and the Coco Devine with Plantation Dark Rum, sherry, Mr Black, house-roasted coffee, and crushed Tim-Tams. These intriguing combinations from Beverage Director Jeremy Ortiz promise to captivate your taste buds and provide a truly memorable experience.
As someone who appreciates the finer points of mixology, the masterclass was a delightful journey into the world of cocktails. It was an interactive and engaging experience, with a mix of writers and influencers in attendance, all eager to learn and share in the excitement.
