We have much to thank our supporters for on this special evening. From re-introducing over 70 animals onto our Ukuwela Conservancy to supplying over 16 reserves with critically needed anti-poaching supplies, it has been a very impactful year.

We are excited to be honoring South African wildlife vet Dr. Dave Cooper who has dedicated his life and career to wildlife. Responding to poaching scenes, helping injured and orphaned rhinos, his career has been one of personal sacrifice and strength.

2018 Fall Swim Gala

BFA_22506_2705282-1024x683.jpg

Join + POOL’s Co-Founders, Board of Directors, and friends at Totally No Boundaries, + POOL’s Fall Swim Gala, on Wednesday, November 14, at Pier 17 in the Seaport District NYC. The event will raise support for the continued development of + POOL so that everybody can #SwimintheRiver.

This year’s event will honor incessantly creative visionaries that have totally no boundaries. Much like + POOL, these individuals push the peripheries of creativity in their industries and collaborate with others to produce the outrageous things we love most about the world.

Claire Weisz is an architect and urbanist, and a founding principal of WXY. We’re inspired by her recent and ongoing work in New York City including the redesign of the Rockaway Boardwalks, Pier 26’s Boathouse/Restaurant, Battery Park’s SeaGlass Carousel, and The East River Blueway Plan. Her insight to co-found The Design Trust for Public Space shows that she shares our same vision of creating projects for the future. The vision that we need to be creating inclusionary, equitable spaces for everybody, with totally no boundaries to access or to good design.

Scott Lazer discovered filmmaking in college, and now works as a creative director and filmmaker directing music videos, short films, documentaries, and branded content for clients in music, advertising, film, and TV. He is currently the Director of Video Production at Dreamville, founded by J. Cole. His videos are surreal; his stories told through the lens of all organic everything. It’s a major vote of confidence when an artist trusts you to share their stories with the world, which is what J. Cole has done with Scott. We have the same trust with him, and can’t wait to see + POOL in his world.

Just Food G.A.L.A.

https_%2F%2Fcdn.evbuc.com%2Fimages%2F49653172%2F21805144990%2F1%2Foriginal.jpg

Welcome to the Just Food G.A.L.A.

This is not your average big-ticket, big-name fundraiser “gala." This is a kind of anti-gala. Our kind of G.A.L.A.: a gathering to activateliberate, and appreciate; that aims to both build community and raise money to support Just Food’s ongoing work in pursuit of a more equitable food system.

#letsredefinelocal

What does "local" mean in New York City? To us, it means what exists here and now, while also carrying the spirit of far away and long ago. It means stories of migration and diaspora. It means honoring long-held traditions, even as we reinterpret and recreate them on our path towards liberation. It means centering the historically marginalized communities that built our city into what it is today. Our "local" is full of paradoxes and complexity, and that's what makes it special.

At the Just Food G.A.L.A., you will get to experience the work of over 30 chefs and culinary artists who use food as a medium to explore these themes. We’re honored to be highlighting more than 30 queer, of color and ally chefs, culinary artists, and good food businesses we love, many working outside and around the traditional restaurant system. These are folks inspired by locality and seasonality, who are engaged in transformative work in their communities through food; and who are making some of the most delicious, thought-provoking food and drink in New York City.

Sake Day at SakaMai

Sakamai Drinks-Sake-3.jpg

This October 1 on National Sake Day, skip the sake bombs and instead head to the Lower East Side’s izayaka and sake lounge, SakaMai, for an educational sake event, with opportunities to test (or develop) your sake tasting knowledge (for prizes!) and the chance to sip some premium sakes, rarely poured by the glass, for one night only.

National Sake Day happens to fall on a Monday night this year, the day of the week when SakaMai usually holds its ongoing Soul of Sake gathering hosted by the inaugural Miss Sake USA, Jessica Joly. As such, SakaMai will hold its first-ever blind tasting Soul of Sake from 6 - 8pm.

For the blind tasting, guests will have the opportunity to taste three curated flights of sake ($16 for 3 glasses) from different regions of Japan: a North Japan Flight (Hokkaidō and Tohōku regions), a Central Japan Flight (Kantō and Chūbu regions) and a South Japan Flight (Chūgoku, Shikoku, and Kyūshū regions).

As a guide, guests will be provided a tasting grid to assist them in guessing the region and prefecture of the flight — in hopes a winning special prizes, exclusively for National Sake Day.

Also for this one night only, premium bottles of sake will also available to everyone at a special discounted rate and poured by SakaMai’s staff, more than half of whom hold expert sake professional certifications.

Premium sakes available by the bottle (one night only!):

  • Katsuyama Akatsuki Junmai Daiginjo - $25

  • Daishichi Minowamon Kimoto Junmai Daiginjo - $18

The event is located at Randall’s Island Park. Randall’s Island Park is one of New York’s City’s most unique and multi-faceted public parks. Located in the middle of the City, the park comprises most of an island in the East River that is situated between Manhattan, The Bronx, and Queens. Featuring a wide array of fields and spaces, Randall’s Island is home to a world class Tennis Center, a full service Golf Center, an IAAF-certified track and field facility (Icahn Stadium), over 60 playing fields, miles of waterfront bike and pedestrian pathways, a newly renovated Event Lawn where concerts and festivals are held, salt and freshwater marshes and a 40,000 square foot environmentally-sustainable Urban Farm that is host to two greenhouses, four rice paddies (the only location in New York!) and 80 raised beds that yield a variety of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables.  The Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA), which oversees and governs the island, is celebrating 25 amazing years of progress in transforming Randall’s Island Park into an innovative and exciting destination for sports, recreation, environmental exploration and cultural events.  Thanks to their tremendous vision and tireless work since 1992, RIPA has revived the park to what it is today.
